Instow (sandy beach, start of the Tarka Trail cycleway, seasonal ferry to Appledore), 2 miles down the estuary and, on the opposite side of the estuary, pretty Appledore.
Atlantic coast surf beaches at Westward Ho! 3 miles, Saunton, 16, and Woolacombe, 21.
