“Middle Lodge is an absolutely marvelous cottage to spend your holiday in and is an absolute credit to the owners.”

It is clearly steeped in history, which is obviously apparent from the outside with some of the workings of the former gate to Hestercombe House still visible. (A visit to Hestorcombe House is recommended for a variety of reasons, not least the fact that staying in the former gate house gives you a certain 'connected' feeling). Middle Lodge itself has been superbly renovated, decorated and maintained, and whilst the interior still continues to show great respect to the property's former life, it is extremely well presented and accommodates modern living seamlessly. The downstairs living areas are very comfortably furnished, the kitchen has everything you need and the bedrooms are a superb haven for a restful night's sleep. The garden may possibly not yet be fully secure for a dog absolutely intent on escaping, (so we kept our two border collies on leads), but I'm sure they would confine sensible, larger dogs. The house stands alone is quite remote, (which suited us perfectly), but amenities are within an easy drive and Taunton has all you could want/need and more. My wife and I fell in love with the place the moment we saw it, and as we are looking towards retiring to the south west we both felt that we could move there quite happily. If you are reading these reviews then the property must have caught your eye - all I can say is go ahead and book it - I don't think you'll be disappointed.

About the location

TAUNTON

Bridgwater 11 miles; Tiverton 21 miles; Weston-super-Mare 30 miles.

The county town of Somerset, Taunton is the perfect cottage holiday destination. The town has excellent buildings with charming stone and Tudor architecture, and there is also fascinating history in the town stretching back over 1000 years including a 10th-century monastery. Taunton boasts a choice of museums and parks, one of which has held the Taunton Flower Show for over 150 years. For outdoor enthusiasts, the Quantock and Blackdown Hills Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty are easily accessible, as well as the Dartmoor and Exmoor National Parks slightly further afield, plus Swell Wood, Ham Wall, and Greylake nature reserves. If a day by the sea is what you're after, the coast is around 20.4 miles away and home to Blue Anchor Bay and St Audries Bay near Watchet; Burnham-on-Sea beach; Kilve beach near Minehead and, of course, the popular seaside resort of Weston-super-Mare, 32.7 miles away but well worth the journey with its great range of activities.
