Pick from these Chagford holiday cottages and embark on an epic adventure in Devon’s Dartmoor National Park.

Why choose Chagford accommodation?

Located near the northern boundary of Dartmoor National Park, Chagford is a market town with many traditional stone cottages. The name Chagford is derived from chag, meaning gorse, and ford relating to the crossing point over the River Teign.

One of the original stannary towns, Chagford had an important role as one of the towns through which all exports of tin were weighed and coinage (tax) collected. The Market House, known locally as the Pepperpot, is built on the site of a former market house and stannary court, dating all the way back to 1574. Today, Chagford is a thriving hub of independent shops, tea rooms, restaurants and pubs.

With Dartmoor literally on the doorstep, it is an ideal location for anyone who enjoys the great outdoors. Walkers can follow the Two Moors Way into the Teign Gorge or ascend to the top of Meldon Hill and enjoy the stunning views on offer.

Where are the best places to visit near Chagford?

There are many beautiful spots to visit on Dartmoor. Head to the tiny settlement of Lydford, home to many historic sites and buildings. Close to Bovey Castle in the small village of North Bovey, a great place to enjoy a relaxing walk on the moor. Set right at the northern tip of the Dartmoor National Park boundary is the town of Okehampton. Okehampton Castle was once the largest castle in Devon and visitors can explore the remains, located in a beautiful setting on a wooded spur.

What are the best attractions in Chagford?

Castle Drogo is a country house and castle built between 1911 and 1930 by Julius Drew and the last castle to be built in England. The castle has recently undergone a six year renovation project to make the building watertight and the first display of items will focus on the early years of the Drewe family.

Slightly south of Chagford is Fernworthy Reservoir, a haven for wildlife, including the rare Marsh Fritillary butterfly. Surrounding the reservoir are a number of walks that will take you through woodland, moorland and meadows. Bring a packed lunch and eat at the picnic area, keeping an eye out for birds flying over the lake.

For people visiting with children, head to Chagford swimming pool, the largest open-air, fresh-water swimming pool in the southwest. Solar panels keep the water nice and warm so you can splash about without feeling cold!
