Situated on opposite banks of Newton creek, on the Yealm Estuary, are the tranquil villages of Newton Ferrers and Noss Mayo. With their close proximity to the River Yealm, a holiday cottage in Newton Ferrers and Noss Mayo makes for a very relaxing and tranquil retreat.
Why book a holiday cottage in Newton Ferrers and Noss Mayo?
Set within the South Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, the area is renowned as a wildlife and bird watcher’s paradise. Keep an eye out for rare birds such as the cirl bunting when exploring the coastal trails. Walkers can enjoy a number of great routes such as Revelstoke Drive - a four mile walk along the rugged coastline.
The river provides great opportunities for sailing and fishing, especially in the summer months. At low tide the creek can be crossed by foot via the Voss, a concrete causeway, or you can travel between the two villages by ferry, in operation between April and September.
Newton Ferrers is the larger of the two villages and has a local shop, post office, butcher and The Dolphin Inn. Noss Mayo, with a population of just 500, has two pubs - The Ship Inn and The Swan Inn. Both look out over Noss Creek and are great spots to sit and enjoy a cold drink or a bite to eat.
Places to visit near Newton Ferrers & Noss Mayo
A short drive north will take you into Dartmoor National Park where you can explore hundreds of miles of heather coated moorland. Head east along the coast and spend a day at Mothecombe Beach or Bigbury-on-Sea. Ride the sea tractor from Bigbury-on-Sea to Burgh Island and enjoy lunch in the Pilchard Inn, a pub that has been serving drinks for over 700 years.
