Why book a cottage in Totnes?

The historic market town of Totnes is located in South Devon at the head of the estuary of the River Dart. The town has existed for over 1,000 years with the first recorded history dating back to 907 AD, when Totnes Castle was built. According to legend, Totnes is the first place that Brutus, Trojan Prince and mythical founder of Britain, set foot on land. The Brutus Stone, a small granite boulder found in Fore Street, is meant to mark this first step.

Today, Totnes has an alternative and bohemian vibe, with an emphasis placed on ethical and fair trade goods. The high street is home to a number of organic food shops, independent retailers and cafés and restaurants.

Totnes has been a thriving market town for hundreds of years and evidence of its wealth is noticeable in the former merchant’s houses that still exist. A market still takes place on a Friday and Saturday throughout the year, with stalls selling food, plants, clothes, antiques and much more. There is also an Elizabethan market held on a Tuesday during the summer months, when stallholders dress in period costumes.
