Why book a Brixham cottage?
Brixham is a beautiful harbour town in South Devon. Once the busiest fishing port in the south west of England, fishing still plays an important role in the life of the town. Visit Brixham fish market to witness the daily auction or simply sample the quality of the local seafood in one of the many fine pubs or restaurants.
Brixham was the landing place of William of Orange during the Glorious Revolution and this event reflects part of the town’s history. Many inhabitants have Dutch surnames and some of the place names are also influenced by the Dutch past.
The maritime heritage of Brixham is no more evident than the full sized replica ship of the Golden Hind that houses a museum beneath her deck. The Golden Hind was captained by Sir Francis Drake and circumnavigated the globe between 1577 and 1580. Learn all about the crew and what life would have been like on the ship.
Brixham also has a wealth of art and culture on offer for visitors. There are several art galleries to look around and a variety of festivals are hosted throughout the year. Brixham Pirate Festival in May has live events and music and BrixFest celebrates local food and drink.
Places to visit near Brixham
Follow the course of the River Dart along the eastern bank and stop off at the picturesque village of Stoke Gabriel, or the market town of Totnes, home to a number of bohemian and alternative independent shops.
