Why book a cottage in Ilfracombe?
Situated on the north coast of Devon, Ilfracombe is rapidly becoming one of the most popular holiday destinations in Devon. With stunning beaches, a vibrant art scene and fantastic places to dine out, it really does have something for everyone.
There are a number of beaches in the area including the intriguing Tunnels Beaches. Hand carved in the 1820’s, there are four passageways that were used to segregate men, women, boys and girls on their way to the beach. The coastline is some of the most dramatic in the country and keen walkers can follow the South West Coast Path to Hartland in the west or Lynmouth to the west. Nearby Exmoor National Park also has a host of walking and cycling trails. More intrepid adventurers can also try a variety of outdoor activities such as rock climbing, abseiling and caving.
Ilfracombe is not short on culture with a number of craft shops and art galleries in the town. Its most famous work of art is Verity, a 20 metre high sculpture by Damien Hirst that can be found at the harbour. There are also lots of attractions that cater to families with children - visit Ilfracombe Aquarium or Combe Martin Wildlife and Dinosaur Park.
Places to visit near Ilfracombe
Take a boat trip to Lundy Island, home to a large puffin population, as well as a number of other varieties of sea birds. Travel west along the coast to Woolacombe, a popular spot for surfing and paddleboarding. The pleasant seaside villages of Appledore and Westward Ho! are located just on the other side of the estuary.
